Our mission is to provide the best training possible to our apprentices and journeymen to aid in the development of their skills for the plumbing, pipefitting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and gas distribution industries. For over 50 years, the Local 190 apprenticeship program has provided training through classroom AND on-the-job learning. This means that apprentices earn a paycheck while they learn.
Training through the United Association and UA Local 190 is not simply for a job, but a career in the plumbing & mechanical construction industry. The divisions within the industry range from residential construction to heavy industrial construction. This allows you to choose from a wide variety of jobs including pipe welding, plumbing, pipefitting, service technician, construction management, estimating, pipe system design, and UA instructor just to name a few. Another benefit to completing the apprenticeship program is that you will receive 45 credits towards an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences through Washtenaw Community College which gives you even more career options within our industry.
No other organization in the country spends as much money on training as the United Association. The reason is simple, we know the importance of providing the highest skilled labor to our contractors. Through the partnership between UA Local 190 and Greater Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association, the apprenticeship program and journeyman upgrade classes allow us stay ahead of the curve when it comes to worker safety, methods of installation, new products and new materials.

UA Local 190 Gas Distribution, hiring for fusing installer, welders helper in Michigan.
UA Local 190 is seeking motivated and dependable Gas Distribution plastic pipe fusing and pipeline welders' helper for contractors throughout the Michigan upper & lower area. This role is critical to ensuring the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of gas distribution pipelines constructed with plastic and steel piping materials. The successful candidate will be trained and certified as a fusion installer and/or welders helpers in a variety of tasks, working in a physically demanding, outdoor environment. Key Responsibilities
- Assist as fusion installer in the preparation, alignment, and joining of plastic gas distribution pipe using appropriate fusion techniques (butt fusion, electrofusion, etc.).
- Support all phases of pipeline construction, including pipe laying, fitting, alignment, and joining, as a composite crew.
- Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and fusion/welding equipment as directed.
- Inspect materials, equipment, and work areas to ensure cleanliness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Prepare pipe and fittings by cleaning, beveling, and measuring to precise specifications.
- Assist in the movement, rigging, and placement of pipe segments and materials on the jobsite.
- Monitor fusing and welding processes, recording temperatures, times, and other critical data.
- Perform pressure testing and leak detection as instructed, ensuring compliance with operating and safety standards.
- Support trenching, backfilling, and restoration of work sites following pipeline installation or repair.
- Follow all safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), working within confined spaces, and adhering to lockout/tagout procedures.
- Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve challenges and maintain project timelines.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and contribute to the development of a safety-first culture.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project completion.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Physically demanding tasks including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
- Exposure to construction sites, heavy equipment, and potentially hazardous materials (with appropriate training and PPE provided).
- Shift work and overtime will be required based on project schedules.

Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required (GED).
- Ability to pass and maintain a DOT drug test.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites, CDL Class A with air breaks is highly desirable but not required.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
- Excellent physical stamina (ability to lift 50+ lbs) and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow procedures.
- Willingness to travel to various project locations in Michigan as needed.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, in response to project requirements.
