Operating Engineers Local 158- Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, NY

Apprenticeship is the process of learning a trade under the guidance of experienced journeyworkers. Our program provides hands-on training at one of our three training sites, classroom instruction, and paid on-the-job-training for our signatory contractors. Local 158’s robust training program teaches you everything you need to know to be a successful operating engineer. Each of our three districts has its own training site, instructors, and equipment.


Premium equipment training and certification programs:




  • NYS Crane Certification

  • Forklift

  • CDL training

  • Excavator and backhoe

  • Dozer and loader

  • Robotic equipment (Brokk)

  • Asbestos

  • CPR

  • Confined space

  • Disaster site worker

  • MSHA

  • HAZMAT

  • Always dress for work conditions at the training center. Boots, hard hats, and safety glasses are essential. No sneakers or casual
    clothing are acceptable for outdoor training.

  • You must be current on your monthly dues.

  • All classes start promptly at 8:00 AM.

  • Sign up for classes by calling the site or union hall, faxing a class sign-up sheet, or use the calendar to register.

  • Be sure to indicate which date you are coming, if more than one is offered.



Requirements


  • Are you at least 18 years old?

  • Did you graduate from high school with passing grades in math and English?

  • Are you able to take a general aptitude test?

  • Are you able to read and understand English and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English?

  • Have you lived within Local 158’s geographical jurisdiction for at least 6 months prior to applying?

  • Are you willing and able to travel to and from job sites within the local’s jurisdiction?

  • Are you willing and able to attend all related classroom training?

  • Are you willing and able to pass a drug and alcohol test at the sponsor’s expense after acceptance into the program?

  • Are you physically able to perform the work of the craft which may include lifting and climbing?
